Grant Aims to Clean Up Historic Old Town Neighborhood

Portland’s Old Town is set to undergo significant improvements thanks to a new grant. The funding will be used to install tree-well covers, reinforce windows, and add gates to enhance the neighborhood’s safety and cleanliness. Jessie Burke, owner of The Society Hotel and chair of the Old Town Community Association, expressed enthusiasm for the tree-well covers, which are made from a resin and cobblestone material that allows water to reach the plants while enabling easier maintenance of the sidewalks. The project faces challenges due to the varying sizes of tree wells and budget constraints that prevent the use of metal covers. Additionally, the new window reinforcements will be designed to be less visible and more resistant to breakage, and the gates will vary in style to comply with the historic district’s regulations.
